Sensitive Teeth (Dentinal Hypersensitivity)

Wisdom tooth pain treatment in Penrith.

Wisdom tooth pain at Bella Dental Penrith is most often caused by impaction (the tooth has not erupted fully), infection around the gum (pericoronitis), decay in the wisdom tooth, or pressure on the neighbouring tooth. Treatment ranges from a salt-water rinse and antibiotics for a flare-up to surgical removal of the tooth, which is usually done by an oral surgeon we can refer you to. We will diagnose the cause, manage the pain, and refer for removal, if needed.

What are wisdom teeth?

Wisdom teeth (third molars) are the last adult teeth to erupt, usually between ages 17 and 25. Most people have 4 (one in each corner of the mouth), some have fewer, and some have none. Modern human jaws are often too small to fit them, which is why wisdom teeth cause problems for a large minority of young adults.

How are wisdom teeth removed?

There are 2 main types of removal:

Simple extraction.

For wisdom teeth that have fully erupted and are easy to access. Done in the dental chair under local anaesthetic.

Surgical extraction.

For impacted or hard-to-reach wisdom teeth. Done by an oral surgeon, often with IV sedation or general anaesthetic.

The procedure itself is quick — usually 20 to 45 minutes per tooth. Recovery takes a few days to a week, depending
on the complexity. The oral surgeon will give you a detailed aftercare sheet.

How do I manage wisdom tooth pain at home?

For mild to moderate pain until your appointment:

Salt-water rinse. 1/2 teaspoon salt in a glass of warm water. Swish gently, do not spit hard. Repeat 2 to 3 times a day, especially after meals.

Pain relief. Paracetamol and ibuprofen together, taken as directed.

Cold compress. On the cheek for 15 to 20 minutes, 3 to 4 times a day, for the first 2 days.

Soft diet. Soup, yoghurt, scrambled eggs, smoothies (no straw). Avoid the back of the mouth on the affected side.

Keep the area clean. Brush gently around the wisdom tooth, even if it is tender. Use a soft brush or a single- tufted brush.

Avoid smoking and alcohol. Both slow healing and worsen pericoronitis.

If the pain is severe, swelling is spreading, or you have a fever, call us for a same-day emergency appointment.
