At this age the jaw is in its maximum growth
phase — and bones are still soft enough that
corrective procedures work most effectively.

reduce the need for extractions, and encourage
proper facial development.
Teens & Adults
Most permanent teeth have erupted by 13–17,
and braces can correct bite, crooked teeth, and
alignment. Adults can also benefit from short-
term orthodontics — moving only the visible front
teeth, often in as little as 5 months.

Am I too old for orthodontics?
No. Teeth move at any age, as long as the gums and bone around them are healthy. Many of our orthodontic patients are in their 40s, 50s, and beyond. Treatment is usually slower in adults — teeth take a few weeks longer to shift — but the result is the same.
What is the difference between braces and clear aligners?
Braces are fixed to the teeth and adjusted in person every 6 to 8 weeks. Clear aligners are removable plastic trays, changed at home every 1 to 2 weeks, with check-ins every 8 to 12 weeks. Braces handle more complex cases. Aligners are more discreet and easier for oral hygiene.
How long does orthodontic treatment take?
Most cases take 6 to 18 months. Mild crowding or a single relapsed tooth can be done in 4 to 6 months. Full bite correction with extractions or jaw alignment usually takes 18 to 24 months. We give you an estimated timeline at the consultation, then refine it after the first few months of movement.
Will I need a retainer after orthodontic treatment?
Yes. Teeth shift back toward their original position without one, especially in the first 1 to 2 years. We usually fit a fixed wire behind the front teeth plus a removable clear retainer for nights. Wear the removable one every night for the first year, then a few nights a week long-term.
Is orthodontics covered by private health insurance?
Often partially, under “orthodontic” extras, with a lifetime limit per member and a 12-month waiting period before claims can be made. The rebate depends on your fund and level of cover. We provide a treatment plan with item numbers so you can confirm your rebate before starting.
