Replacing a missing tooth in Penrith.
Why do I need to replace a missing tooth?
- Chewing function. A missing molar can cut chewing efficiency by 10 to 25% on that side.
- Drift. The neighbouring teeth lean into the gap over time, creating new problems and making future replacement harder.
- Opposing tooth over-eruption. The tooth in the opposite jaw can grow up or down into the gap, throwing off the bite.
- Bone loss. The jawbone under a missing tooth shrinks over time. The longer you wait, the more bone is lost, and the harder (and more expensive) future replacement becomes.
- Gum disease risk. Open gaps trap food and are harder to clean.
- Speech. Front-tooth gaps can affect “s”, “sh”, and “th” sounds.
- Aesthetic. Especially for front teeth.
- Bite changes. As teeth drift, the bite can change, leading to TMJ strain, wear, and headaches.
What are my replacement options?
Dental implant.
Dental bridge.
Partial denture.
Do nothing.
How do I choose the right option?
- Location. Front teeth usually get the most attention (implant, bridge, or partial). Back molars can sometimes be left or replaced with the most affordable option.
- Condition of neighbouring teeth. Healthy neighbours suit an implant. Heavily filled or damaged neighbours can be crowned as part of a bridge.
- Bone quality and quantity. An implant needs enough bone. Bone can be grafted, but it adds time and cost.
- Your age and health. Younger, healthier patients usually do well with implants. Some medical conditions (uncontrolled diabetes, bisphosphonate use, heavy smoking) reduce implant success.
- Time. A bridge is 2 to 3 weeks. An implant is 3 to 6 months from placement to final crown. A partial denture is 2 to 4 weeks.
- Budget. Partial denture < bridge < implant.
- Personal preference. Some patients do not want surgery. Some do not want a removable plate.
We will go through each option, with its pros, cons, and cost, at your consultation.
How is a dental implant placed?
A dental implant is placed in 3 stages over 3 to 6 months:
- Implant placement. The titanium post is placed in the jawbone under local anaesthetic. The gum is closed over the top. The bone fuses to the implant over the next 3 to 6 months (a process called osseointegration).
- Abutment placement. Once the implant is stable, a small connector (abutment) is attached to the top of the implant.
- Crown placement. A custom-made crown is screwed or cemented onto the abutment. The result looks and functions like a natural tooth
How is a dental bridge placed?
A bridge is placed in 2 to 3 appointments over 2 to 3 weeks:
- Preparation. The teeth on either side of the gap are numbed and shaped to receive crowns. A digital scan or impression is taken, and temporary crowns are placed.
- Fitting. 1 to 2 weeks later, the temporaries are removed, the bridge is tried in, the fit and bite are checked, and the bridge is cemented permanently.
- Review. A short follow-up 1 to 2 weeks later to check the bite and your comfort.
How is a partial denture made?
- Impressions of the upper and lower jaws.
- Bite registration and tooth shade selection.
- Try-in of the wax setup, to check the fit, bite, and appearance.
- Fit of the finished denture, with adjustments.
How much do replacement options cost in Penrith?
What happens if I do nothing?
For some gaps, doing nothing is the right call:

Wisdom teeth, once healed

Some back molars that do not show and are not affecting the bite

A gap where replacement is not possible (medical reasons, financial)

The neighbouring teeth may drift, making future replacement harder

The jawbone shrinks under the gap

The bite can change, leading to wear and TMJ issues

Chewing efficiency drops
We will tell you honestly, if doing nothing is reasonable for your case.
