At Bella Dental Penrith, we invest in modern dental technology because it improves patient outcomes — faster diagnoses, more accurate treatment, more comfortable appointments, and longer-lasting results. This page explains the technology, materials, and techniques we use, and the standards we follow for safety and infection control.
Diagnostic technology
Good treatment starts with a good diagnosis. We use the following diagnostic technology at our South Penrith practice:
- Digital dental x-rays (intraoral). Lower radiation than traditional film x-rays (typically 70 to 80% less), with the image available on screen within seconds. We use intraoral sensors for periapical and bitewing x-rays during check-ups and treatment.
- Panoramic x-ray (OPG). A single image of the whole mouth, including the teeth, jawbones, jaw joints (TMJs), and sinus areas. Used for wisdom tooth assessment, jaw pathology screening, and orthodontic planning.
- Digital photography. We take clinical photos at the consultation, during treatment, and at the review appointment. This helps us plan, communicate, and track progress.
- 3D CBCT referrals. For complex cases (impacted wisdom teeth, dental implants, root canal retreatment, jaw pathology), we refer to a local radiology practice for a 3D Cone Beam CT scan. We receive the scan digitally and use it for precise treatment planning.
Treatment technology and techniques
We use modern materials and techniques across the practice:
Tooth-coloured composite resin.
We use modern nanohybrid and nanoceramic composite resins for fillings, bonded to the tooth with a separate adhesive system. The material is shade-matched to your natural tooth, and the result is hard to see.
EMS Airflow (Guided Biofilm Therapy).
A modern professional cleaning system that uses a controlled stream of warm water, air, and fine powder to remove plaque, biofilm, and staining from the teeth and gumline. More comfortable than traditional scraping for many patients, and more thorough at removing biofilm.
Bioclear Method.
A specific cosmetic-restorative technique for closing “black triangles” (small gaps at the gumline between teeth), rebuilding worn front teeth, and reshaping teeth with composite. Bioclear uses clear forms and injected composite, which gives a more even, polished result than traditional hand-layered bonding.
Spark Clear Aligners.
We offer Spark clear aligners for adults and teens who want to straighten their teeth without traditional braces. Spark uses a series of custom-made clear trays, each worn for 1 to 2 weeks, to gradually move the teeth into position. Treatment typically takes 6 to 18 months.
Digital impressions.
For crowns, bridges, and clear aligners, we use an intraoral scanner to take a digital impression of the teeth. Most patients find this more comfortable than traditional alginate impressions, and the result is more accurate.
Sterilisation and infection control
Sterilisation and infection control are non-negotiable. We follow the standards set by:
- Standards Australia AS/NZS 4815 — the Australian and New Zealand standard for the reprocessing of reusable medical devices in office-based health care facilities
- The Dental Board of Australia's Guidelines on infection control — mandatory guidelines for all dental practitioners in Australia
- The Australian Dental Association (ADA)'s Guidelines for infection control — practical guidance for dental practices
In practice, this means:
- Class B autoclaves. We use Class B autoclaves (the highest standard for dental sterilisation), which sterilise instruments using vacuum-pulsed steam at 134 °C. Every cycle is monitored with chemical and biological indicators.
- Single-use materials wherever practical. Needles, suction tips, saliva ejectors, and certain hand instruments are single-use. They are opened in front of the patient and disposed of in sharps containers immediately after use.
- Personal protective equipment (PPE). Clinicians wear gloves, masks, protective eyewear, and gowns or aprons for every patient. PPE is changed between patients.
- Surface disinfection. All clinical surfaces (chair, light, handles, counters) are wiped with hospital-grade disinfectant between patients. Barriers (plastic wrap) are used on items that are hard to disinfect.
- Waterline management. Dental chair waterlines are tested regularly, and we use the recommended flushing and disinfection protocols to keep the water safe.
- Sterilisation log. Every sterilisation cycle is logged, and the log is reviewed regularly. We can show you our sterilisation process and answer any questions about it.
Materials and product safety
Every material we use in your mouth is approved by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA), the Australian Government authority that regulates therapeutic goods. We use materials from reputable Australian and international manufacturers, and we follow the manufacturer’s instructions for use, storage, and shelf life.
We do not use:
- Amalgam containing mercury in our practice (we use tooth-coloured composite for fillings)
- Materials that do not have TGA approval for dental use
- Counterfeit or unverified products from non-reputable sources
Pain management and patient comfort
We use modern pain management techniques to make appointments as comfortable as possible:
- Topical anaesthetic gel before every injection. Applied to the gum for 1 to 2 minutes, it numbs the surface so you barely feel the needle.
- Slow injection technique. The anaesthetic is delivered slowly to reduce the sting.
- Warmed anaesthetic. Local anaesthetic can be warmed to body temperature before injection, which reduces the discomfort.
- Nitrous oxide (happy gas). A mild inhaled sedative for anxious patients, especially children. You stay awake but feel calm and floaty. Wears off within minutes.
- Oral sedation. A tablet (usually a benzodiazepine) taken 1 hour before the appointment for moderate anxiety. You will need someone to drive you home.
- IV sedation. A deeper form of sedation, given by a specialist anaesthetist, for more complex work or highly anxious patients.
Continuing education and keeping up to date
Dental technology evolves quickly. The Dental Board of Australia requires all registered dentists to complete a minimum of 60 hours of continuing professional development (CPD) over a 3-year cycle. Our team exceeds this minimum, with recent focus areas including:
- Digital dentistry and intraoral scanning
- Modern composite and ceramic materials
- Clear aligner therapy
- Implant dentistry and digital planning
- Infection control updates
- Sedation and pain management
We bring what we learn back to the practice, and we review our technology and materials at least once a year to make sure we are using the best available options for our patients.

Questions We Get Often
Answers to Your Most Common Questions About Dental Care and Our Services
Is the x-ray radiation safe?
Yes. Digital dental x-rays use 70 to 80% less radiation than traditional film x-rays. The dose from a single intraoral x-ray is roughly equivalent to a few hours of natural background radiation. We use lead aprons and thyroid collars for additional protection when appropriate.
Is the EMS Airflow cleaning safe?
Yes. EMS Airflow is widely used in modern dental practices around the world. It is safe for teeth, gums, and most dental restorations. We avoid it on some restorative materials and on patients with certain respiratory conditions — we will assess your suitability at the appointment.
Do you use amalgam?
No. We use tooth-coloured composite resin for fillings. Composite is bonded to the tooth, looks like the surrounding tooth, and does not contain mercury.
Is the equipment sterilised between patients?
Yes. All reusable instruments are sterilised in a Class B autoclave between every patient. Single-use items (needles, suction tips, saliva ejectors, certain hand instruments) are used once and disposed of safely. We follow the Dental Board of Australia’s Guidelines on infection control and the AS/NZS 4815 standard.
What is a CBCT scan?
A Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) scan is a 3D x-ray of the teeth, jaws, and surrounding structures. It gives us much more detail than a standard 2D x-ray, which is useful for complex implant planning, impacted wisdom teeth, and jaw pathology. We refer to a local radiology practice for CBCT scans.
Do you use digital impressions?
Yes, for crowns, bridges, and clear aligners, we use an intraoral scanner to take a digital impression. Most patients find this more comfortable than traditional alginate impressions, and the result is more accurate.
Is Bioclear the same as veneers?
No. Bioclear is a specific composite bonding technique that uses clear forms and injected composite. It is more conservative than veneers (less tooth structure removed), and the result can be repaired easily. Veneers are thin porcelain shells that require removal of some enamel. We will recommend the right option for your case.
How do you stay up to date with new technology?
Our team exceeds the Dental Board’s CPD minimum (60 hours over 3 years) and attends conferences and workshops in Australia and overseas. We review our technology and materials at least once a year to make sure we are using the best available options.
