Dental anxiety support in Penrith.
What is dental anxiety?
How common is dental anxiety?
Dental anxiety is very common. The Australian Research Centre for Population Oral Health (part of the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare) estimates that around 1 in 6 Australian adults has high dental fear. It is more common in women, in people who have had a difficult dental experience in the past, and in people with generalised anxiety.
What causes dental anxiety?
The most common causes:
- A previous bad experience at a dentist, especially in childhood
- Fear of pain (the most common specific fear)
- Fear of the unknown — not knowing what is going to happen
- Loss of control — lying back, unable to see or talk
- Embarrassment about the state of the teeth or gums
- Fear of needles, drills, or the smell of the dental surgery
- Generalised anxiety or other anxiety disorders
- Sensory sensitivities (sound, light, touch) — which is part of why our Sunflower Aware Practice training matters
What helps with dental anxiety?
- Find a dentist you trust. A dentist who explains, listens, and never pressures you is the single biggest factor in overcoming dental
- Communicate. Tell the team you are anxious. Tell them what specifically worries you. A good dental team will adapt.
- Use the stop signal. Agree on a hand signal with your dentist that means “stop.” You are in charge of the pace.
- Sedation, if needed. For some patients, sedation (nitrous oxide, oral, or IV) makes treatment possible. We offer all three at our Penrith clinic (IV sedation requires a specialist anaesthetist, which we can arrange).
What does Bella Dental do for anxious patients?
- Longer appointments. Time to talk, time to go slow, time to answer questions.
- Tell-show-do. We explain what we are going to do, show you the instrument, and only then start.
- Stop signal. Raise your hand, we stop. No questions asked.
- Gentle anaesthetic technique. Topical numbing gel first, slow injection, and check you are numb before we start.
- Noise-cancelling headphones and music, if the drill sound is a trigger.
- Sunflower Aware Practice. Our team is trained to support people with invisible disabilities, including anxiety, autism, PTSD, and sensory processing differences.
- Sedation options. Nitrous oxide (happy gas), oral sedation (a tablet before the appointment), and IV sedation (specialist anaesthetist) for more complex work.
What is sedation dentistry?
Sedation dentistry uses medication to help you relax during dental treatment. There are 3 main types:
Nitrous oxide (happy gas).
Oral sedation.
IV sedation.
Not every patient needs sedation. Many anxious patients do well with communication and longer appointments alone. We will talk through the options at your first visit.
What happens at my first appointment if I am anxious?
- We meet, sit down, and listen to your concerns.
- We explain what the first appointment will involve, and you can stop at any time.
- We look at your teeth and gums gently, with a mirror and a small probe.
- We may take x-rays, if you are comfortable with that.
- We talk through a treatment plan and costs. No work happens without your consent.
- We book the next appointment at your pace.
Many anxious patients find that the first visit is the hardest, and it gets easier from there.
How can I manage dental anxiety at home?
Practical steps before and during your visit:

Book a morning appointment. Less time to dwell, less time for adrenaline to build.

Eat a light meal an hour or two before (unless you are having oral or IV sedation, in which case fasting may be needed).

Avoid caffeine for a few hours before, if it makes anxiety worse.

Bring headphones and a calming playlist.

Breathe slowly. Box breathing: 4 seconds in, hold 4, out 4, hold 4. Repeat 5 to 10 times.

Tell the front desk when you arrive. We will let the team know to take things slow.

Bring a support person, if it helps.
