Broken or chipped tooth in Penrith.
What counts as a broken or chipped tooth?
What causes a broken or chipped tooth?
The 6 most common causes:
- Biting something hard. Ice, hard lollies, olive pits, bones, popcorn kernels, or a hidden piece of bone in a meal.
- Trauma. A knock to the face from a fall, sport, motor vehicle accident, or assault.
- Old large fillings. A tooth with a big filling is weaker than a tooth with no filling, and the surrounding wall can break away.
- Tooth decay. Decay weakens the tooth from the inside. A heavily decayed tooth can crumble under normal chewing pressure.
- Grinding or clenching (bruxism). Long-term grinding wears the tooth down and can cause cracks or chips.
- Age and wear. Older teeth have more cycles of stress and are more likely to chip.
What are the symptoms of a broken or chipped tooth?
- A sharp or rough edge you can feel with your tongue
- Pain on biting or chewing, especially on release of pressure (a classic sign of a cracked tooth)
- Sensitivity to hot, cold, or sweet food
- Pain that comes and goes
- Visible chip or crack in the tooth
- Bleeding from the tooth or the gum around it (if the break is deep)
- Swelling of the gum or face (if the nerve is dying or has died)
When should I see a dentist urgently for a broken or chipped tooth?
- Severe pain that will not settle
- A break with visible bleeding from the centre of the tooth (the nerve may be exposed)
- A large piece of the tooth missing, with a sharp edge cutting your tongue or cheek
- A tooth that has been knocked out completely (time-critical: re-implantation within 30 to 60 minutes gives the best chance of saving the tooth)
- A tooth that is loose after a knock
- Swelling of the gum or face
What should I do before my appointment?

Save the broken piece in milk or saline (not water), and bring it with you. Sometimes we can re-bond it.

Rinse gently with warm salt water to keep the area clean.

Cover any sharp edge with dental wax (from a pharmacy) or a small piece of sugar-free gum to protect your tongue and cheek.

Avoid the broken tooth when eating. Soft diet on the other side.

Take paracetamol or ibuprofen for pain, as directed.

Do not use superglue or any household glue to re-attach the piece.
